OAKLAND — Nearly four months after a liquor store clerk was shot for refusing to lower the price of a $40 bottle of booze, police have arrested a suspect.A 34-year-old Oakland man was arrested in late September in connection with the June 23 shooting, court records show. He is next due in court for an arraignment hearing on Oct. 16.The Alameda County District Attorney’s office charged the man with attempted robbery, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and multiple counts of illegal gun possession, court records show. In a police interview, he claimed that he was worried the clerk was pulling a gun on him so he fired his own handgun. But the clerk’s story — which police say is backed up by surveillance footage — is markedly different. The clerk reported to police that the man shot him three times in the belly during a heated argument over the price of a liquor bottle. After shooting the clerk, the suspect fled the area, but didn’t bother to take t...

Packers head into bye week needing to find solutions for their slumping offense

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:08:24 GMT

Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander was simply trying to explain why Green Bay’s defense needs to do more. But his comments underscored how much of a concern Green Bay’s offense has become as the Packers head into their bye week.“Yeah, I think at this point it’s pretty obvious that the defense has to not give up any touchdowns,” Alexander said after the Packers’ 17-13 Monday night loss at Las Vegas. “I think that’s the part of being self-critical of our defense because the offense is pretty young and they’re still figuring out their mojo. So the defense, we’ve got to do more to score and stop them from scoring.”The defense did plenty to help the Packers win a game Monday night. The offense just failed to do its part, which has been a common theme lately for a young group suffering serious growing pains. After averaging 31 points over their first two games, the Packers have averaged just 17 over their past three. The offense’s plunge explains why the Packers are below .500 for the first...

As the Israel-Hamas war continues, there has been a growing number of reports of disinformation appearing online, on websites and social media. And in this new age of deepfake videos, AI-manipulated content and overall fictitious posts, more care should be taken when consuming information.“It’s really hard for somebody to just look at their feed, and then just trust that everything’s true,” said digital expert Kim Komando. Her first piece of advice is to see if stories exist on other websites. One way to do that is to use Google to search for the headline of the piece you are reading. She also said the headline itself can sometimes tell you a lot.“If you see a story and it has that big clickbait headline, it’s probably fake,” Komando said. With pictures, Komando recommends downloading the images in question and uploading them to Google or Tin Eye to do a reverse image search. It will search for the picture and show you where the image came fro...
