Santa Cruz hotel mass shooting call deemed a ‘hoax’ SANTA CRUZ — Local emergency officials quickly spotted a hoax this week when they heard a 911 call reporting a mass shooting at a city beach area hotel. The report came in at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday from a caller saying that a 40-year-old Hispanic man wearing black shorts and carrying a machine gun had shot 26 people, according to dispatch recordings. The caller, able to “clone” the phone number he used, appeared to be calling from the hotel’s front lobby, said Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Jon Bush. The emergency dispatcher, while taking the call seriously, was able to notice some irregularities with the call that Bush asked not be disclosed so as to avoid copycats.Related ArticlesCrime and Public Safety | Trial-setting scheduled for East Bay woman accused of fatal 2021 shooting of 19-year-old Crime and Public Safety | 130 mph Sonoma County high-speed police chase ends in Marin Crime and Public Safety | Attempted gas theft at East Bay BAR...

California Coastal Commission backs Santa Cruz overnight large-vehicle parking ban SANTA CRUZ — A regional coastal protection oversite agency voted Thursday night to permit a large-vehicle overnight parking ban in the city of Santa Cruz for one year. The 9-2 Coastal Commission vote occurred after nearly a two-and-a-half-hour discussion and included a “reluctant” approval from newly seated Commissioner Justin Cummings. Cummings, elected as a Santa Cruz County supervisor in November, served on the Santa Cruz City Council when its Oversized Vehicle Ordinance came before the body — and voted no on approving the new law, at the time. During Thursday’s discussion, Cummings disclosed his earlier vote and clarified that, in his latest role, he would be analyzing the ordinance through the lens of the state Coastal Act.At the permit’s expiration, Santa Cruz officials would need to start at square one in obtaining approval for the coastal permit, but would no longer be under the oversite of the Coastal Commission unless the issue was appealed back up to that body, Central Coa...

UK economy grows sluggishly in 1st quarter as double-digit inflation curbs consumers spending LONDON (AP) — The U.K. economy grew sluggishly during the first three months of the year as double-digit inflation curbed consumer spending and labor unrest curtailed output in industries ranging from transportation to healthcare and education.Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, increased 0.1% in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics said Friday. The figure matched the growth rate during the fourth quarter of last year and was in line with economic forecasts. The figures come a day after the Bank of England approved a 12th consecutive interest rate increase as it struggles to curb inflation that has remained at around 10% since July. The bank also upgraded its economic outlook, saying the “underlying picture is more positive” than it was earlier this year.“Let’s be clear, whilst the Bank of England may believe the U.K. economy will now avoid the predicted recession entirely, the country is not in g...

Rolling with Jokic-Murray combo, Nuggets prepare for Western Conference finals PHOENIX (AP) — Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone said it was around December when he thought this could be a championship-caliber team.Jamal Murray was a believer even sooner. Like in 2019.“When we’re healthy, we know what we can do,” Denver’s point guard said. “We just need everyone on the court. We’ve always had the potential.”After watching the Nuggets steamroll the Suns in Game 6 to clinch the Western Conference semifinals, it’s hard to argue with him. Nikola Jokic scored 32 points and finished with a triple-double, Murray added 26 and the Nuggets are off to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2020 after beating the Phoenix Suns 125-100 in Game 6 to clinch the series. Denver has never made the NBA Finals. The top-seeded Nuggets will play the winner of the Lakers-Warriors series. The Lakers have a 3-2 lead.No matter who advances in the other series, the Nuggets will likely get less press than their opponent. The Lakers have LeBron James...

Hurricanes ride collective scoring into Eastern Conference finals of NHL playoffs

Hurricanes ride collective scoring into Eastern Conference finals of NHL playoffs RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — It wasn’t long after the Carolina Hurricanes had closed out a second playoff opponent when defenseman Brent Burns began heaping praise on the team’s forwards for making it easy for the defensemen to jump into the offense. One of those forwards, Jesper Fast, sat to his right and couldn’t hold back. “Well,” Fast said, “you make it pretty easy for us as well.”The Hurricanes weren’t supposed to be able to do this: advancing in the playoffs after a series of injuries hit their forward group to sideline some of their most naturally talented goal-scorers. Yet the collective approach has worked so well that the Hurricanes are finding the net more frequently than they did in the regular season despite being down in bodies — and now has them in the Eastern Conference finals.“It’s really a five-man group,” Burns said after Thursday’s 3-2 overtime win in Game 5 to eliminate the New Jersey Devils. “We talk about that. On the nights things a...
