OAKLAND — It appears Cal Stevenson’s next shot at the big leagues will be with a Bay Area team, but it won’t be the Athletics.Stevenson, the former Kennedy-Fremont star who was designated for assignment this week by the A’s, was sent to the Giants Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.Playing with the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, Stevenson was hitting .348 (7-for-23) at the time of his DFA with two doubles. Had Stevenson not been sent to the Giants, he would have been free to sign with the A’s or any other team after clearing waivers.Last season, Stevenson got a brief shot with the A’s, hitting .167 in 23 games with three doubles and one RBI. (AP) — George Mason has named Marvin Lewis as its new, full-time athletic director, beginning July 1.School President Gregory Washington announced Lewis’ hire Wednesday after a monthslong search for Bradford Edwards’ replacement. Edwards left last fall to become chief operating officer at NFL Alumni. Nena Rogers has since served in an interim role and oversaw the hiring of former star Tony Skinn as men’s basketball coach when Kim English went to Providence. Long days are ahead as people work to cleanup their community after historic floods damaged their homes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency responded to a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood to assess the damage, Wednesday. “Thank God they’re here because it’s been a week, it’s been seven days since this flood,” said Anna Rysedorph whose neighborhood flooded. There is now help for people who need it most. “We’ve seen a lot of people who had their lives turned upside down by this,” said John Mills, FEMA. “It is just heartbreaking some of the situations that we’re seeing here.”It is still a lengthy process with FEMA only being a part of the recovery. “FEMA individual assistance is only designed to help jump start survivors’ recovery, to give them a hand up on some basic human needs,” Mills said.
