PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a three-year contract on Friday, giving the club some long-term stability behind starter Kenny Pickett.Trubisky was about to enter the second season of a two-year deal he signed with Pittsburgh last spring. The signing gives the Steelers a bit of salary cap relief as they try to fortify the roster ahead of the 2023 season.Trubisky j oined the Steelers in March 2022 after a stint backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo. He began 2022 as the starter in Pittsburgh before being replaced by Pickett at halftime of what became a loss to the New York Jets in Week 4.Trubisky, the second overall pick by Chicago in the 2017 draft, passed for 1,252 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions while appearing in seven games for the Steelers last season. The signing means the depth chart behind Pickett in 2022 will remain intact in 2023. The Steelers signed longtime backup Mason Rudolph to a one-year deal last week. Rudol...PGA Championship Leaders Cards

HIROSHIMA, Japan — For the past 15 months, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been intensively courting the U.S. and Europe to win financial, military and political backing for his war against Russian invaders. He’s about the broaden his audience significantly. This weekend, Zelenskyy is expected to travel to Japan to meet G7 leaders at the group’s summit in Hiroshima — his first trip to an Asian country since Russia invaded in February last year. While he’s there, he’ll try to win over nations referred to by some Western diplomats as “swing states,” those countries that are not firmly backing Ukraine in the conflict, including Brazil, India and Indonesia. Three pivotal figures in Zelenskyy’s sights will be Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Joko Widodo. While their countries are not actively backing Russia’s invasion, these nations follow a deep-se...Italy floods trigger blame game

ROME — The worst floods in 100 years have triggered finger pointing over Italy’s slow progress in stabilizing its land and soil despite throwing billions at the problem. Torrential rains following months of drought have caused floods in the northern and eastern regions of Emilia Romagna and Le Marche that have killed at least 14 people and left an estimated 20,000 homeless. Dozens of cities and towns were submerged and thousands of landslides occurred after around six months’ rain fell in 48 hours. Pierluigi Randi, the president of Ampro, the association of weather experts, said it was the worst flood to affect Italy in a century. The floods sparked a torrent of questions about why vast amounts of funding allocated for structural works to counter hydrogeological instability has never been used. Italy is particularly vulnerable to flooding: It suffers two-thirds of Europe’s landslides; 94 percent of municipalities are at risk of landslides, flooding or coastal erosion; and...Spat May Underscore Larger House-Senate Power Struggle

The fireworks on Beacon Hill this week over rules and scheduling in one legislative committee — normally a mundane topic — were touched off by what multiple Senate offices said was a broader push by the House to assert dominance over the committee process, while a House chair contended his joint panel had been held “hostage” from doing its work.At issue are proposed rules changes that one House chair said would prevent a lawmaker from holding up the flow of legislation, while several senators said the changes would empower the House side of a committee to mount greater control over what’s intended to be a collaborative bill-crafting process. Two months have flown by since all of the Legislature’s 30-plus joint committees failed to meet a March 16 deadline to agree on internal rules that govern their hearings and voting procedures, and still, not a single panel has filed any rules for this session with the clerks’ offices.By contrast, a third ...Latest news
