WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency is delaying plans to tighten air quality standards for ground-level ozone — better known as smog — despite a recommendation by a scientific advisory panel to lower air pollution limits to protect public health. The decision by EPA Administrator Michael Regan means that one of the agency’s most important air quality regulations will not be updated until well after the 2024 presidential election.“I have decided that the best path forward is to initiate a new statutory review of the ozone (standard) and the underlying air quality criteria,” Regan wrote in a letter to the EPA advisory panel last month. The letter cites “several issues” raised by the panel in a recent report that “warrant additional evaluation and review.”The review, which will last at least two years, will “ensure that air quality standards reflect the latest science in order to best protect people from pollution,” Regan said.Regan’...Big Weather Changes Loom! Riverside County officials declared a local emergency Tuesday in response to flooding and leakage of unknown materials from a toxic dumpsite.Officials said flash flooding on Sept. 1 had caused a breach of the retaining berm at the Lawson Dumpsite on Torres Martinez tribal land near Thermal. On Saturday, the leakage prompted evacuation warnings for three mobile home parks — the San Jose, Vargas, and Gamez communities.“The Lawson Dump is considered to be the largest toxic dump in California and continues to threaten our communities,” said Riverside County Fourth District Supervisor, V. Manuel Perez. “This is a public health emergency in addition to the flash flooding damage that was worse for the eastern Coachella Valley than Hurricane Hilary. From left: Aerial photo of Lawson Dumpsite in 2007 (Google Earth); Fires from Lawson regularly affected the residents of the nearby trailer park. He tied Roger Clemens’ single-season franchise record with his ninth game of at least six scoreless innings, tops in the majors this season. The A’s traded Bassitt to the Mets on March 12, 2022 before the right-hander signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent nine months later.Bowden Francis recorded three consecutive strikeouts in the nint...Tuesday’s Scores

Shintaro Fujinami hadn’t been trusted to pitch in high-leverage situations in more than two weeks.Manager Brandon Hyde had no choice Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. After six relievers combined to blow two late leads, Hyde was forced to bring in the volatile reliever with a one-run lead in the 10th inning with All-Stars Félix Bautista and Yennier Cano unavailable — the former due to injury, the latter because of workload.Fujinami delivered. The Japanese right-hander stranded the automatic runner, striking out Nolan Schanuel to end the game and hand Baltimore a 5-4 win.Fujinami had the chance to record his second save of the season thanks to Jordan Westburg, whose RBI groundout scored zombie runner Austin Hays in the top half of the 10th.The victory is the Orioles’ 44th in come-from-behind fashion this season, and it maintained their 3 1/2-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays atop the American League standings. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s possible trip to Russia might be like his first one in 2019 — a rattling, 20-hour ride aboard a green-and-yellow armored train that is a quirky symbol of his family’s dynastic leadership. In what would be his first foreign travel since the start of the pandemic, United States officials say Kim may visit Russia this month for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly to advance talks on North Korean arms sales to refill Russian reserves drained by its war on Ukraine.According to U.S. reports, a potential venue for their meeting is the eastern city of Vladivostok, the site of their first meeting in April 2019, where Putin is expected to attend the annual Eastern Economic Forum that takes place on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University from Sunday to Wednesday. How Kim, the 39-year-old authoritarian leader, would get there is a focus of media attention. While Kim has used planes more frequently than his...Stark urban-rural divide emerges in tight Utah GOP special congressional primary race

A distinct urban-rural divide left a Utah special congressional primary race between a Donald Trump critic and supporter too early to call Tuesday in a tight race that will likely produce the replacement for U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart. The GOP special primary to replace Stewart saw Celeste Maloy, who was Stewart’s chief legal counsel and has his endorsement, with a narrow lead over former state lawmaker Becky Edwards late Tuesday.Edwards, a Trump critic, was leading in two urban counties, but Maloy, a Trump supporter, overtook her with strength from rural areas. Votes yet to be counted included thousands of mail-in ballots over the next two weeks.Maloy told KUTV she knew it was too early to know if she would win but was happy to see rural counties in the district play such a key role in the results.“Look at the numbers in rural Utah, these are incredible,” Maloy said. “I’ve said this a lot: Rural Utah feels under-represented. They feel like people don’t show up.”After seeing her early l...Latest news
